Have you ever wondered how to use the “Page Widget” Effectively ?
If you’re an experienced blogger you may already know this, but for those newbies – this is a great little tool to use to manage your pages differently on your WordPress website.
And why would you want to do that? Well for neatness, better organization, easy viewer navigation, horizontal menu, and pages of importance. You want your blog to look clean and crisp, not confusing. Using the “Page Widget” is a good way to do this.
The first thing you want do is learn how and where to get the information you need to be able to use the page widget.
First, notice when you open up the Page Widget, it asks you what pages do you want to EXCLUDE . This is because EVERY page you create will automatically show up when published in the widget. So how do you exclude pages that you don’t want visitors to your blog to see? So …
You’ll need to go back to your WordPress Menu on the left-side of your screen and click on “Pages –> All Pages”. A list of all your pages, published and drafts will appear.
Place your cursor over any page title and keep your cursor there – don’t move it. Now look at the VERY bottom of your screen to the left and you’ll see some text. Something like this:
Notice the number I circled? It’s 518, just before the “&”.
This number is this page’s ID and is the number you’ll list in the “Page Widget” to exclude it from being visible on the sidebar and visitors to your blog..
Yep. This is time consuming because you have to find the Page ID for each page. And, by the way, this is the same process to find a post ID if you ever need to. Once you exclude the pages/posts you don’t want to see, the ones you do will appear automatically.
Now why would you want to use the “Page Widget”? For the reasons listed at the beginning of this post –
- To highlight specific pages
- quick navigation
- Organize content
- Vertical menu
